Container Plastics printer friendly viewprinter friendly

There are limitations in the use of all plastic materials and we must mention that the buyer is fully responsible for the final decision making in selecting a given type and make up of a container, closure or other packaging material. The buyer is cautioned that testing must be done prior to the packaging of any product in plastic.

As a general guide, the buyer should consider the following:

  • Shelf Life
  • Visibility
  • Labeling
  • Oxygen Barrier
  • Colors
  • Moisture Barrier
  • Environmental Aspects
Packaging / shipping considerations include:
  • Load Strength
  • Drop Strength
  • Heat Endurance
We caution our customers that not all products are compatible with all packages - it is important and critical that you research the components of your products - whether it appears hazardous or not - to assure yourself it can be packaged, shipped, stored, displayed and used by the end user safely in the package materials you are considering. For this reason, Cleveland Bottle & Supply Co. assumes no responsibility for the testing or compatibility of our bottles with your products.

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
Low Density Polyethylene provides a soft sided but durable container. It can be squeezed and has good memory without stress cracking but is less resistant to chemicals, gases and odor deterioration. It does not tolerate high temperatures.

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

High Density Polyethylene is a strong material. It offers impact resistance and can be handled without damage or defect. A clear bottle is not made in the HDPE material. Although it is excellent for water based chemicals and compounds, it is not recommended for petroleum or solvent based products.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
Polyvinyl Chloride has been developed to withstand heat and strength without an increase in weight. PVC offers good clarity, a wide variety of bright dense colors and excellent solvent resistance. PVC is recommended for products containing alcohols and oils.
Polystyrene (PS)
Polystyrene is a material recommended for applications around heat, including heat filling, as it can withstand temperatures up to 180ºF.
Polypropylene (PP)
Polypropylene is recommended for products that are non-solvent based with packaging demands that require strong color clarity.

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)
PET is FDA approved for all food types. PET has superior clarity and is up to 85% lighter than glass containers. It is shatterproof and has an excellent oxygen and moisture barrier with a good solvent resistance.

Please note: It is important to match the plastic resin to the application and products.

Important Information
It is the customer’s responsibility to check and test the compatibility of the product with the container and closure. Cleveland Bottle & Supply Co. assumes no responsibility for product and container / closure compatibility.
